How it works
Target$_i = Portfolio × Target%_i ; Trade_i = Target$_i − Current$_i
- Enter your current dollar amounts in stocks, bonds, and cash.
- Enter your target percentages (they should sum to 100).
- The calculator returns current weights, target weights, and how much to add or trim in each bucket.
Worked examples
- $70k stocks, $20k bonds, $10k cash. Target 60/30/10 on $100k → sell $10k stocks, buy $10k bonds.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I rebalance?
Once a year, or when any asset drifts 5+ percentage points from target — whichever comes first.
Should I rebalance in taxable accounts?
Direct new contributions to under-weight assets first; only sell to rebalance when unavoidable to minimise capital-gains tax.
